August in Alaska is busy! There’s still so much time to spend outdoors, to enjoy vacation, and to prepare for fall. For some families, August is also time for children to transition to kindergarten.
Whether you’re at home doing chores, out running errands, or on a family trip, your child can learn so much about the world. Literacy is all about finding the right words to express thoughts and feelings. Your child learns how to do that through talking, singing, playing, and reading together along the way.
With all this activity, what does literacy on the go look like? Books in the car and diaper bag, check. Talking and singing during bathtime, check. Playing games while waiting in line, check. Describing the shapes of clouds, check again. Now that we think about it, there might be even more literacy opportunities outside of your home than we can imagine.
