As you read with your child, take time to point out various features. You don’t need to do it every time you read aloud, but try to add them in when your child is in the reading zone:
- Book parts: front, back, spine
- Title of book, name of author/illustrator, where you begin reading
- Language: a letter, a word, first word of a sentence, last word in a sentence, punctuation marks, capital letter, lowercase letter
As your child becomes more familiar with these elements, you can make it into a game where your child has to find various elements.
Some parents like to trace their finger under words as they read a book. You can make this into a game where you read slower/faster or point really hard at exclamation points.
