Animal related STEM activities
- Build a Nest : there’s nothing more fun than using different materials to make a nest. If things are still frozen outside, try some shredded paper.
- Whirly Twirly Flying Birds : use a balloon and a few other things to explore how birds off and thrust forward
- Chromatography Butterflies: a butterfly craft that teaches children about chromatography (a fancy word for the separation of mixtures – are you curious yet?)
Plant related STEM activities
- Springtime Seed Hunt: get outside and search for seeds where you live (and if all else fails, cut open an apple to find some seeds)
- Plastic Bottle Greenhouse: recycle a bottle into a home for a seedling
- Grow a Celery Plant from Scraps: teaching children that food doesn’t always come from a store is a great lesson
STEM activities that Reuse and Recycle
- Make Egg Geodes: who knew that you can turn egg shells into geodes with household ingredients?
- Cardboard Bird Feeder: making a birdfeeder is a great activity that will help your child observe birds as they visit your feeder
- Recycled Plastic Flowers: this is a beautiful, but ambitious project – definitely for the family that loves to use their glue gun!
Weather related STEM activities
- Rainbow Jar: a rainbow themed experiment that shows how liquids have different weights
- Rain Cloud in a Jar: this is a classic experiment for showing how rainclouds work
