Does it seem strange or perfectly normal to talk with an infant who can’t respond to you? No matter how you answer, this month we want you to start talking (even) more with your baby, toddler, and preschooler by narrating your daily activities.
Before we jump into the fun stuff, let’s talk about why narrating your day is as important as your morning cup of coffee (or three). Sharing your daily adventures with your child helps build their background knowledge about the world, boosts language skills, and strengthens your bond. Even if they can’t respond, hearing language helps children begin to understand the sounds and flow of language. The more words your child experiences at a young age, the easier it can be to decode written language later in life. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to turn even the most mundane moments into memorable stories.
P.S. Children are best able to pick up language from native speakers, so make sure to use your mother tongue. If you speak multiple languages, choose the one you’re most comfortable with to give your child an example of fluent language.
