Start with upper case letters only
- Bigger letters are easier for children to see and recognize than lower case
- Upper case letters are parts of most signs so they will be easier to point out
- Upper case letters use more straight lines and are less complicated
Letters don’t need to be learned in alphabetical order
- Start with letters your child sees most often
- It’s easiest to start with the first letter of your child’s name because they see it the most
Connect letters with what they look like
- Talk about shapes, similarities to other things they already recognize, for example: “O looks like an orange or a circle”
- Remember that it takes time for children to learn new things and they need tons of repetition
