Learning to ready for whatever meets you outside our door is an important part of being an Alaskan child, especially when it comes what you wear!
- Layering: Layering is key to dressing young children for any season. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep them dry, add insulating layers for warmth, and finish with a waterproof and windproof outer layer to protect against the elements.
- Consider UV Protection: In warmer seasons, select clothing with built-in UV protection or dress children in lightweight, long-sleeved tops and pants to shield their skin from harmful sun rays.
- Protect Extremities: Don’t forget to protect extremities like hands, feet, and heads with gloves, socks, hats, and appropriate footwear for the season.
- Pay Attention to Comfort: Ensure that clothing fits comfortably without being too tight or restrictive, allowing children to move freely and comfortably during play. If a child isn’t comfortable, they won’t wear it (tight shoes, I’m looking at you)!
- Encourage Independence: Teach young children how to dress themselves appropriately for the weather, fostering independence and self-care skills.
