The winter holidays are upon us! This year, they are all packed into a short, 10-day period: Winter Solstice, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and New Year’s Day. Whatever particular holidays you and your family celebrate, I encourage you to stop, take a moment, and read.
With cold temperatures and snow on the ground (somewhere in Alaska!), it’s the perfect opportunity for some family reading time. Whether it’s reading your child or grandchild’s favorite story once again, or trying out a new book they’ve received as a holiday gift, make time to sit down and read together. It’s relaxing, cozy, and can be a lot of fun. If there are older children around, do include them, too. Even readers like to hear stories being read.
Some favorite books in the homes of Best Beginnings’ staff these days include:
Mercy Watson series, by Kate DiCamillo
Any Mo Willems book!
Books with Frozen’s Elsa and Anna characters
*Shh! Bears Sleeping, by David Martin
Bark, George, by Jules Feiffer
Books with animals or dinosaurs
*I Love My Mommy Because…, by Laurel Porter-Gaylord
*I Love My Daddy Because…, by Laurel Porter-Gaylord
* Imagination Library book
And for a good read just by yourself, I’ve been hearing lots of positive buzz about The Overstory, by Richard Powers. And here are a couple of lists for more ideas:
