This list features books about what a day in the life of a child looks like – can you find the spots where adding some songs fit?
What Happens on Wednesdays by Emily Jenkins (Preschool)
Young children don’t experience time or schedules quite the same way that adults do. For one little girl, her Wednesday is not delineated by the time on the clock, but by her experiences and activities. Follow along as she encounters the different sounds, tastes, smells, and sights of a multiethnic Brooklyn neighborhood. Find it at the Library
Things to Do by Elaine Magliaro (Preschool)
This beautifully written book lets children imagine the things they could do if they were different objects and creatures in nature like rain, a bird, a honeybee, or even a snail. It invites readers to think about the descriptions and experience them for themselves the many things a child can encounter outside during their day. Find it at the Library
This is How We Do It: One Day in the Lives of Seven Kids from Around the World by Matt Lamothe (Preschool, School Age)
This book shows selections from the daily lives of children from different countries around the world. It compares the different buildings the children live in, what they eat, what they wear, how they travel to school, and how they relax after school. Sharing this story with your children will help them broaden their horizons and relate better to the variety of people they meet in their lives. Find it at the Library
Living with Mom and Living with Dad by Melanie Walsh (Toddler, Preschool)
Young children may struggle with the concept of divorce and co-parenting and how things will change for them from one week to the next (or even within the same week). This simple, straightforward book lists some differences between living with mom and living with dad in an uplifting manner without addressing the reasons why there might be two homes. It helps serve as a reminder that, no matter the differences between the two houses, or which parent the child is with, the child is loved and cared for. Find it at the Library
Saturday by Oge Mora (Preschool, School Age)
Saturdays are the day that this mother and daughter get to spend together, and they have a special routine. But on this particular Saturday, NOTHING is going right. As they experience frustration after frustration, mom is beginning to despair until her daughter reminds her that being together is the most important thing of all. Find it at the Library
