- Alaska Governor's Summit on Early Learning
Alaska was one of only ten states awarded a $10,000 grant this year from the National Governors Association to hold a Governor's Summit on Early Learning. Best Beginnings, along with several partners *, supported the Governor's Office in this endeavor.
Over 150 legislators, other policymakers, and statewide leaders from a variety of sectors attended the Summit to ensure Alaska's future would be supported by a prosperous economy and an educated, productive workforce. Attendees drafted recommendations to give to Governor Sarah Palin and others on the following goals:
- All children, especially those most in need, have access to early literacy and learning opportunities in their home or in out-of-home settings;
- These services are coordinated; and
- Parents, grandparents, and extended family are engaged in young children's learning with needed support, resources, and incentives.
The draft recommendations will be finalized by the Best Beginnings Early Learning Council in January 2008 and then presented to the Governor shortly after that. Governor Palin in her opening comments at the Summit expressed her support for the work being done at the Summit, how important it was to the future of the state, and how she looked forward to seeing what recommendations were put forth.
