The North Star Imagination Library began operation in 2008. With an energetic group of volunteers and assistance from Communities in Schools of Alaska and Best Beginnings, the program registered over 2,500 children in its first year or approximately 35% of those under the age of five in the Fairbanks area.
Major donors include Best Beginnings, Auto Service Company, the Fairbanks Rotary Clubs and Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. Over $73,000 was raised in the first year from a wide variety of groups, businesses and individuals.
Local partners include The Fairbanks Early Childhood Development Commission, Fairbanks North Star Borough School District, Clear Channel Radio, Fairbanks News-Miner, Noel Wien Library, and the Literacy Council of Alaska.
A wide range of enrollment and fundraising events have been conducted to date, such as booths at the Fairbanks Home Show, Women’s Show and Tanana Valley State Fair; presentations to local service groups; Riverboat Cruise Kick-off; 5K Run for Reading; Read-a-thon in the schools; and McSeuss Night at local McDonalds Restaurants.
To enroll a child: Register online at www.dollysimaginationlibrary.com. All children under the age of five living in the Fairbanks North Star Borough are eligible to register.
