The Alaska Child Care Provider Awards were presented in Anchorage on July 15, recognizing quality child care and early education in the state.
Hosted by KCET Los Angeles and KAKM Southcentral Alaska on behalf of the daily PBS shows A Place of Our Own and Los Niños en Su Casa, the reception recognized seven providers:
Krista Bertholl - Juneau
Linda Campanella - Kenai
Julie Allen Hendrix - Anchorage
Donna Kirby - Anchorage
Jane Krise - Anchorage
Gina Palmer - Ketchikan
Luz Angelica Schuitt - Anchorage
One of the women honored, Luz Angelica Schuitt, will be featured on the program on September 4, 2009 as “Child Care Provider of the Week.” A Place of Our Own airs in Alaska on KAKM Monday-Friday at 1:30 p.m., and is underwritten in part by BP Alaska. BP Foundation, PBS, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting provide major funding nationally for the series.
The first national winner from Alaska in 2007, Gilda Flores, went on to be invited as one of 17 national child care providers to Capitol Hill. Gilda comes from a long line of educators and makes sure her charges know they can achieve anything they want. She received a Congressional letter of recognition, but unfortunately for Alaska, Gilda recently relocated to Texas.
Khurshid Ferozepurwalla, the first national winner from Alaska, was on hand for the ceremonies in Anchorage July 15.
