Anchorage Imagination Library is a nonprofit program promoting early childhood literacy by mailing free age-appropriate books to children from birth to age 5. Today more than 9,000 children in the Anchorage area look forward to receiving a brand new book in their mailboxes each month!
Anchorage Imagination Library is about more than free books; it’s about empowering the Anchorage community to support our children and their education right from birth. One of the ways we accomplish this is through our free, family-friendly events that are regularly hosted throughout the community.
Anchorage Imagination Library needs your help and invites you to get involved! Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us!
Anchorage Imagination Library plans and hosts free, family-friendly events with the goals of increasing parent knowledge of early childhood learning, positive parent-child engagement, social connections, and having fun! These events are held throughout the community. There are two opportunities to volunteer within Family Engagement. Team members are needed for the Family Engagement Action Team, which works to plan and implement the events. The second area is Event Volunteering, which helps staff and run the activities, book swap tables, read the featured book or just welcome families at the door.
Time Commitment: Members of the Family Engagement Action Team meet the first Thursday of each month at the BP Energy Center and help staff Family Engagement events when they are able. Family Engagement event volunteers are needed at events which occur approximately 4 to 6 times per year at varying locations. Events typically take place on Saturday mornings and last for approximately 4 hours.
Enrollment (Additional volunteers not needed at this time)
Anchorage Imagination Library enrolls children in the program throughout the municipality of Anchorage. The Enrollment Action Team works to identify opportunities to reach children to enroll them with a special focus on low-income populations. Occasionally we have events in the community that are geared towards gathering enrollment and marketing our events to the public. We need volunteers to help at these events. The Enrollment Action Team Lead organizes our participation in special events such as Neighborhood GIFT and the Thread Book Party in the Park.
Time Commitment: 30 minutes to get trained on the database and learn the ins/outs of our enrollment before your first event. Meeting frequency for Enrollment Action Team to be determined.
This group of volunteers works pretty independently and on their own schedule. This group of volunteers enters new enrollments for the free book program into our database. This is a good opportunity for those who can be trained then work from home on their own time.
Time Commitment: 1 hour of training to use the database. Approximately 3 hours per month to pick up and process books.

Special Projects (Additional volunteers not needed at this time)
This could be anything from helping with a mailing, writing an article for an upcoming newsletter, assisting with graphic design on a new flyer, or prepping materials for an upcoming event. Occasionally we have projects that children or groups can assist with as well.
Time Commitment: Will vary and will be on an as-needed basis.
