Book Kits
A new book-lending service is now available statewide to local libraries and organizations that serve infants and toddlers. The Anchorage Public Library Ready to Read Resource Center has compiled three types of book kits.
Lapsit Bags contain six books, a CD, puppet/prop, and suggestions for fingerplays, songs, and action rhymes. Each bag is based on a theme, such as Alaska animals.
Ready to Read Tubs are filled with 30 to 50 board books and paperback picture books, as well as a resource guide and DVD for child care providers. Book selections vary from tub to tub and some tubs include materials in languages other than English.
Read to Me at Home Tubs contain 10 small canvas bags with three board books in each bag. The bags can be loaned to families. The books are all different titles and the book selection varies from tub to tub.
The kits are designed for circulation to entities such as child care centers, licensed family child care providers, libraries, parenting classes, health clinics, and faith organizations. The project was funded by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services to the Alaska State Library.
